Doing cornrows may take some time. Practice is also important in braiding cornrows. The more practice someone has in styling cornrows, the easier and faster the work will be.
Here are some tips that one should consider before starting braiding cornrows. One should have at least five centimeters hair length if it is curly or if
straight seven to eight centimeters length of hair before his hair can be braided.
Having cornrows is more about adding style to the hair not lengthening it. So someone should not expect that hair will be longer after getting cornrows. Aqua wax might be needed if someone has a smooth hair which can tighten up the locks and gives the hair more shine.
How to braid hair step by step:
- Comb hair until it is tangle-free. If the hair is too slick, you can use some type of wax to get a better grip of the hair but its not a must.
- Apply leave on conditioner to make the hair smoother.
- Plan what cornrows style will be applied on the hair.
- Then divide the hair into sections and choose smaller cornrows because they hold tighter than the large ones.
- Clip the hair not being used to avoid complications.
- Start by taking a small part of hair then divide that part into three smaller but equal portions.
- Then start by putting the left strand at the top of the center strand making the left the new center and then take the right strand and put it at the top of the new center strand.
- Then take a small amount of hair that is not included in the original three and braid it with the others. Continue braiding until the end of the hair reached. Make sure the cornrows are tight and sticking to the scalp.
- The last step is to place a rubber band into the end of the hair tight enough not to make the cornrows loose. Start the next portion of the hair and repeat the steps above.

Hey i still dont get it how you make the braid from the stop of the head i still don’t know how to do it
What do you mean the stop of the head? The top? You section off the hair and then you split the top into 3 parts and do a basic french braid and as you go down you grab some of the hair thats under it. Still working on adding sound and clearer instructions. Thanks for visiting the site.
Ok I’ve learned on my own how to braid and i currently braid my husbands hair but i have a problem when i reach the bottom of the braid, it always becomes loose and never really attached to the scalp as the rest of the braid I dont know what i am doing wrong but i can’t seem to figure it out. Now i’ve watched the video of how to braid and she did it just a lillte different by grabbing the hair as she goes along with out letting any of the strands go, I dont let any of the strands go well adding a new piece of hair but i do hold two strands in one hand well adding the extra piece of hair to the next strand and then continue raiding. now the cornrows stay in tight and look great but the back of the head is loose. what can i do differently to change this.??
You need to practice with your finger grips. It is not so much that you are pulling the hair but you grip it and twist parts of it under as you french braid and the torque will hold it in place.
Basically, try different finger positions and grips until you get it right. Dont pull on the hair that will cause pain and make it harder to learn the proper technique.
Good luck!
Thanks so much i’ve been trying to do the different finger positions and sometimes it works but i still end up going back to the same problem! LOL! But Im sure I’ll get it! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!!! RIGHT??!!
